Hand Case 17 History/Physical Exam

A dorsal plate fracture of the PIP is caused by an axial load. This occurs with the finger in extension, causing forced hyperextension. A possible history includes when a finger is struck by a ball or another player during competition. Patients will often describe it as “jamming” their finger.

Exam findings include pain and edema over the PIP with difficulty extending the PIP.
