Hand Case 17 Background

The PIP is a bicondylar hinge joint, limited to flexion and extension. The central slip of the long extensor tendon inserts at the base of the dorsal middle phalanx. With hyperextension, the bony insertion can avulse, causing a dorsal plate fracture. This injury is often associated with volar dislocation at the joint.
