In contrast to reduction techniques used for interphalangeal reductions, MCP dislocations should not be reduced using longitudinal traction to avoid volar plate injury.  With the wrist and MCP flexed, use dorsal pressure on the proximal phalanx to reduce. Volar dislocations and failed reductions often require surgical intervention.
