History/Physical Exam

CMC dislocations are often due to high-energy trauma from closed fist, fall, crush, or MVC injuries. They present with tenderness over the CMC joint, and often ecchymosis and significant edema. These injuries can be missed due to distracting injuries obtained at the time of the trauma or intoxication. With a 5th CMC dislocation, shortening of the affected pinky compared to the unaffected side may be observed when the palms of the hands are placed together.
