Hand Case 13 History/Physical Exam
The finger will have fusiform swelling. Fusiform, or “spindle-shaped” swelling is notable for its engorgement in the middle and it tapering towards the edges1. The affected finger is typically held in slight flexion. There will be erythema that may track proximally in the course of the tendon sheath. There will be pain that is worst with palpation over the flexor surface and on passive extension of the finger. Depending on the extent of the infection there can be sign of lymphangitic streaking as well.
