Hand Case 12 Background
Volar plate fracture
Background
The volar plate is a thick fibrocartilaginous band that is part of the PIP joint. It prevents extreme extension of the PIP joint and guides the tendons at initiation of flexion. It separates the joint space from the tendons. Volar plate injury is often associated with dorsal dislocation of the middle phalanx. Avulsion fractures of the middle phalanx are often seen with volar plate injuries.
