Odontoid Fracture

Odontoid fractures require orthopedic or neurosurgical consultation.

- Type I fractures are managed nonoperatively.

- Nondisplaced type II fractures are treated with a Halo vest.

- Displaced type II fractures are subject to non-union and often require surgery.

- Type III fractures disrupt the C2 ring and are unstable. However, they often do not require surgery.
