Femoral Shaft Fracture

History and Physical Exam

History reveals high energy trauma such as automobile accidents, falls from a height, or gunshot wounds.

Patients often arrive immobilized in traction devices, which should be removed while maintaining immobilization of the limb.

On exam, there is significant pain, swelling, and inability to bear weight. The examiner must perform a careful search for other orthopedic, visceral, and neurovascular injuries.
