Foot Case 5 ED Management

Navicular Fracture

ED Management

Most navicular fractures are suitable for immobilization and outpatient orthopedics follow-up with non-weightbearing status. Dorsal avulsion and tuberosity fractures are usually managed with a walking cast for 4-6 weeks.

Displaced fractures >20% of the articular surface often require operative fixation and the orthopedist should be called from the ED. The main complications are arthritis and avascular necrosis, which is particularly common for fractures of the body, so early orthopedics involvement is important for these fractures.
