Ankle Case 8 Diagnosis

Achilles tendon rupture is primarily a clinical diagnosis, and therefore imaging is usually unnecessary. If the diagnosis is unclear, options are:

  1. Ultrasound
  2. Splint the patient and make non-weightbearing until outpatient MRI is obtained.

Ultrasound image of the Achilles tendon rupture in the same patient in a longitudinal view, revealing the two severed ends of the tendon interrupted by a dark, hypoechoic hematoma.
